Preceptors available in California - August 7 2020 update

Today we have another entry in our series of posts showcasing available preceptors. This one is for all the Californians out there. We’re getting new  preceptors all the time, but they’re not always available.

Primary Care (all ages) in Riverside

You must book a minimum of 45 hours with this preceptor.

This clinic sees patients of all ages, most of them go there for urgent care issues, but many are follow-ups from other primary care visits. They also do school and work physicals. Other common procedures at this clinic include wound care, suturing and I&D treatment of abscesses.

Work schedule: Tuesday, Wednesday (9:00 am – 8:00 pm)

Primary Care (all ages) in Corona

You must book a minimum of 45 hours with this preceptor. Spanish skills highly required. The preceptor notes that 90% of the patient population at this clinic speaks Spanish.

This is an urgent care clinic dealing with acute and chronic illness. The site offers X-rays, ultrasound, and a lab. Students will see many common procedures like toenail removals, laceration repairs, and dermatological work. Evening hours and weekend hours available.

Work schedule: Monday (9:00 am – 6:00 pm), Wednesday (8:00 am – 8:00 pm), Saturday and Sunday (8:00 am – 7:00 pm)

Primary Care (adult only) in Buena Park

You must book a minimum of 45 hours with this preceptor.

This is a bilingual clinic. The preceptor is only able to offer rotation experience on Mondays. There are opportunities to perform routine physical assessments and consults, well woman exams, and walk-ins. This also includes ordering lab tests, diagnostic tests, and working with medication.

Primary Care (all ages) in Compton

You must book a minimum of 45 hours with this preceptor.

This site sees acute and chronically ill patients in a large, underserved community. The clinic is bilingual and deals with physicals, medication management, and intake assessments, in general.

Work schedule: Tuesday, Wednesday (9:00 am – 5:00 pm)

Primary Care (all ages) in Compton

You must book a minimum of 45 hours with this preceptor.

Bilingual clinic located in a low income area. Weekend hours available. Most patients will present with multiple conditions from type-II DM, HTN, thyroid disease, and others. The clinic also does family planning and OB-GYN services. Students will perform multiple blood tests, hearing exams, blood pressure tests, and HIV testing.

Work schedule: Monday – Thursday (9:00 am – 6:00 pm), Saturday (9:00 am – 1:00 pm)

Primary Care (all ages) in Moreno Valley

You must book a minimum of 45 hours with this preceptor.

Urgent care facility seeing patients of all ages. Evening hours and consecutive days available. According to the preceptor, it is common to see a pap smear, 3 to 4 physical exams, 2 to 3 medication management cases, and a possible mini surgery on any given day. The clinic performs their own lab work, ultrasound, eye and hearing tests, etc.

You must book a minimum of 45 hours with this preceptor. The clinic is bilingual.

This site sees patients of all ages. The experience will include OB, women’s health, pediatrics, and all types of family practice. Evening hours and consecutive days are available. There are also weekend hours and the clinic is located near public transit.

Work schedule: Tuesday (9:00 am – 5:00 pm), Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday (9:00 am – 6:00 pm). Friday (9:00 am – 2:00 pm)

Primary Care (all ages) and Women’s Health in Ontario

Urgent care clinic seeing a lot of women’s health patients. Pap smear, pileup removal, medication management included. This rotation requires the student to have previous experience with IUDs.

Work schedule: Monday – Wednesday (10:00 am – 6:00 am), Thursday (9:00 am – 5:00 am)

Primary Care (all ages) and Acute Care in Torrance

You must book a minimum of 45 hours with this preceptor.

Consecutive days and evening hours available. Primary care and urgent care site. Students will see minor procedures such as partial nail removals, abscess drainage, laceration repairs, X-rays, and local anesthesia. Scrubs are required with a lab coat and stethoscope.

Work schedule: Wednesday – Thursday (11:00 am – 9:00 pm)

Psychiatry/Mental Health in Irvine

You must book a minimum of 45 hours with this preceptor. The clinic is bilingual.

The preceptor is a psychiatric NP working with a psychologist. Students will see patients with bipolar disorder, multiple personality disorder, chronic depression, mental and physical abuse, and “socialistic abnormalities.” 60% of patients are above 18. Medication management is included. Consecutive days are available too.

Women’s Health (OB+GYN) in Fallbrook

This site only allows students enrolled in a WHNP program.

Pap smears, birth control, STI testing and education, UTIs, mammograms, hormone management and education, thyroid testing, and annual physical assessments are some of the things to expect here. The clinic is bilingual.

Primary Care (all ages) in Visalia

You must book a minimum of 45 hours with this preceptor.

This experience will include multiple physical examinations, lots of symptoms related to colds and the flu, allergies, headaches, and multiple women and men’s health intro exams. Many patients have this facility as their main primary care provider. The clinic is bilingual and offers evening hours.

Women’s Health (OB+GYN) in San Diego

You must book a minimum of 45 hours with this preceptor. This site currently does not accept male students.

The clinic has agreements in place with the following universities: Azusa Pacific University, Cal State San Marcos, San Diego State University, University of California San Diego, Western University of Health Sciences, University of San Diego, Scripps Mercy, Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, Georgetown University, Samuel Merritt University, Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. Universities without an agreement in place with this site could have to wait for up to a year to have it completed.

This OB-GYN office does pap smears, mammograms, sees vaginal order issues, fungi issues, thyroid testing, STI prevention, pregnancy prevention and education. Prenatal care also included. Consecutive days are available for students.

Work schedule: Monday – Friday (9:00 am – 4:30 pm)

This is a private practice offering Family Medicine. Consecutive days available for traveling students.
